During late June and throughout July you may wish to visit the South terrace of Gledstone Gardens to pick some strawberries.
The first thing that will strike you is that the strawberries are not grown on the ground but on ‘table tops’, which means no back bending, stained knees, slugs on your fruit. Just beautiful fresh fruit at waist height.
The table tops were designed as a way of making the simple pleasure of picking fruit more accessible for many of our senior customers. The system in effect is not table tops but can be best described as a railway track with the rails 30cm apart and standing on a post 1 metre high. Grobags are set out on the tracks, along with the irrigation system.
